The Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) for KURARAY POVAL™ (Polyvinyl Alcohol), considering bio-ethylene integration (mass balance approach), has been updated based on the latest methodology and data.

The new “total climate change” value for 1 kg of KURARAY POVAL™ is now 1.78 kg CO₂ equivalent.

Calculation Conditions

  • Reference Standards/Guidelines: ISO14040, ISO14044, ISO14067
  • Reference Period: 2024
  • System Boundary: Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 (Categories 1, 3, 4, 5) – Cradle to Gate
  • Calculation Software: LCA for Experts (GaBi) by Sphera Solutions GmbH
  • Database: Managed LCA Content (MLC) ver. 2024.2 by Sphera Solutions GmbH
  • Impact Assessment Methodology: IPCC AR6 GWP 100
  • Verification Method: Internal verification by the responsible LCA department

Notes:
a.  A cut off rule was applied for some minor raw materials within the range of 2% or less of the total input weight to the process subject to the calculation.
b.  Mass allocation of all Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of the plant was applied to the main product and a co-product.
c.  The CO₂ emission factor for the sustainably sourced raw material is based on the secondary data from the database. 
d.  The data provided before May 1, 2025, was calculated using a different version of the database (MLC ver. 2023.2). We have confirmed that the differences in PCF values from the previous year are more significantly influenced by the database updates than by our production conditions.
 

This updated figure shows our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement in reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions.
