news-54 Fri, 26 Oct 2018 15:38:33 +0200 Versatility champion celebrates 60th anniversary: KURARAY POVAL™ is entering new markets and stepping up customer focus https://www.kuraray-poval.com/de/news/detailansicht/news/versatility-champion-celebrates-60th-anniversary-kuraray-povalTM-is-entering-new-markets-and-step/?tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&cHash=8dd577a8586a2efe7dc87de5fbc495d4 KURARAY POVAL™ is 60 - and now the world's largest PVOH producer is entering new markets with products such as MOWIFLEX™ and customer-specific solutions.
Hattersheim, October 25, 2018. Speciality chemicals corporation Kuraray is the world's largest producer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH). Now its PVOH Business Unit is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a new strategic focus. Thanks to materials like MOWIFLEX™, which is used, for example, as a support filament in 3D printing, KURARAY POVAL™ is extending its reach to new markets. In addition, this “versatility champion” is stepping up its customer focus by offering customised solutions. Moreover, increased capacity and new acquisitions in the USA will ensure that Kuraray maintains its position as a leading supplier of this thermoplastic material in the future.

“Kuraray is now the world's largest producer of PVOH. 60 years ago we were one of the first producers of this thermoplastic material, making us a pioneer in this sector,” says Bernd Frischbier, Vice President of the Poval Resin Business Area. “Increased capacity and new acquisitions in the USA will ensure we keep our leadership position in the future.” The PVOH Business Unit at Kuraray, a global leader in speciality chemicals, which is based in Tokyo, Japan, and has its European headquarters in Hattersheim, Germany, is introducing a new strategic focus to mark this anniversary. “Demand for products tailored to specific applications is growing fast. In the future, we will therefore be working even more closely with our customers and developing products with individual properties,” explains Bernd Frischbier. “We are also entering completely new markets with innovative solutions such as MOWIFLEX™ 3D 2000.”

MOWIFLEX™ 3D 2000: Poval is conquering 3D printing
MOWIFLEX™ is a polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer blend that is used, among other things, as a water-soluble support material in 3D printing. “With our new MOWIFLEX™ 3D 2000 we are currently entering the 3D printing filament market,” says Heiko Mack, Head of Poval Business at Kuraray. “That is a completely new field of application for PVOH.” MOWIFLEX™ 3D 2000 has excellent printing properties and enables the production of complex structures, even those containing moving parts, in one piece. After printing, the MOWIFLEX™ 3D 2000 support structures can easily be dissolved in water. The dissolved material is biodegradable so it can be disposed of conveniently through normal wastewater systems.

3D printing is just one of the many new fields of application for KURARAY POVAL™. The physical and chemical properties of this polyvinyl alcohol resin make it suitable for use in the paper, textile and construction industries and in ceramics, face masks, packaging and electronics. “The potential of this ‘versatility champion’ is nowhere near exhausted,” says Heiko Mack. “In future, we will be using this advantage to develop even more customer-specific solutions.” For instance, products tailored to specific applications and sectors can be produced by varying saponification and viscosity. For example, KURARAY POVAL™ markets variants with a very low methanol content for the cosmetic industry. The product range also includes special low-ash grades for fine ceramics.

From pioneer to market leader in the PVOH business
Kuraray started to produce PVOH in 1950, initially as a precursor for the manmade fibre Vinylon. Commercialisation of KURARAY POVAL™ started in 1958. That was a success story: in response to rising demand and new product variants, Kuraray increased capacity. The construction of a new production facility in Singapore and the acquisition of the PVOH business of Clariant AG in 2001 made Kuraray the world's leading producer of polyvinyl alcohol. “Over the years, we have successfully established KURARAY POVAL™ in a very demanding market,” says Bernd Frischbier. “Our strategic refocusing will enable us to build on that position in the future.”

Kuraray is the world’s largest producer of PVOH. Now this “versatility champion” is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Thanks to further expansion of capacity and recent acquisitions in the USA, Kuraray is strengthening its position as one of the leading producers of this thermoplastic material.

From paper and adhesives to the electronics industry: thanks to its special properties, KURARAY POVAL™ is used in many different sectors. The aim of the strategic refocusing is to offer even more customer-specific solutions in the future - and enter new markets with products like MOWIFLEX™ for 3D printing.

Support structures that can be washed away: the PVOH-based polymer blend MOWIFLEX™ 3D 2000 is Kuraray's first product for 3D printing. This filament can be used to produce support structures for demanding shapes and simply dissolved in water after printing.

news-35 Thu, 16 Nov 2017 14:31:43 +0100 KURARAY POVAL ™ - Ceramic Binder: Low ash polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) grades are now available directly from the manufacturer, Kuraray Europe GmbH https://www.kuraray-poval.com/de/news/detailansicht/news/kuraray-poval-TM-ceramic-binder-low-ash-polyvinyl-alcohol-pvoh-grades-are-now-available-direct/?tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&cHash=d7e944d6126448e3b3e48821e9d569e8 Hattersheim, November 16, 2017. As from January 2018 Kuraray will take over the direct sales of KURARAY POVAL ™ for use as a temporary binder in the ceramics industry.
Ceramic materials require a high quality binder during the production process. KURARAY POVAL ™ is a low-ash polyvinyl alcohol grade binder that provides high green strength, low viscosity and very low ash levels. As from January 2018, Kuraray will distribute the temporary ceramic binder KURARAY POVAL ™ directly to end customers.

In the production of technical ceramics, the binder plays a decisive role: it must ensure the appropriate viscosity of the liquid ceramic slip and exhibit a high green strength in the cold-pressed mold. In addition, the binder should burn without residue during the firing process. Kuraray, one of the world's leading specialty chemicals companies based in Hattersheim am Main, offers polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) as a temporary ceramic binder with the KURARAY POVAL ™ grades - including low-ash variants. "As of January 2018, Kuraray will be distributing the various KURARAY POVAL grades directly to the ceramics industry," explains Heiko Mack, Head of Poval Business at Kuraray.

Higher green strength and reduced energy consumption
KURARAY POVAL ™ serves as a temporary binder and softener for ceramic compounds. Thanks to its special properties, KURARAY POVAL ™ is particularly suitable for technical ceramics. They are used in a number of areas within the ceramics industry for example, automotive, mechanical engineering and medical technology. They find use in spark plugs, filters, electronic components and in computer chip capacitors. KURARAY POVAL ™ has several advantages in use, the required quantity is lower than with common binders and demonstrates very high green strength: The special ceramics retain their shape when not fired, even during shaking and transport between the processing steps. In the sintering process, the binder shows minimal shrinkage and decomposes at the end into the constituents water and carbon dioxide. In addition, KURARAY POVAL ™ ensures a liquid ceramic slurry with very low

viscosity, which makes processing more efficient. Due to this low viscosity significantly less water must be evaporated later during firing. This significantly reduces energy consumption.

news-33 Mon, 23 Oct 2017 08:00:00 +0200 Kuraray at TCT formnext in Frankfurt am Main: New MOWIFLEX™ filament for 3D Printing https://www.kuraray-poval.com/de/news/detailansicht/news/kuraray-at-tct-formnext-in-frankfurt-am-main-new-mowiflexTM-filament-for-3d-printing/?tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&cHash=4b89cbe2c6f94fc7beaf46b111e88321 Hattersheim am Main, October 23, 2017. Kuraray is launching a new 3D printing filament manufactured under the MOWIFLEX™ brand offering a ground breaking water soluble support material technology to 3D printing. The company is presenting the development at TCT formnext in Frankfurt am Main, Germnay, from November 14 - 17, 2017.
MOWIFLEX™ as a water soluble support material for 3D printing shows excellent printability and cold water solubility combined with low moisture absorption from the atmosphere. This enables printing of complex structures, even including moving parts, in one piece and high quality print using FFF (fused filament fabrication) technology.

After printing is complete, the support structures can be easily dissolved in water, which can be conveniently disposed to drain due to the biodegradable nature of MOWIFLEX™. Our latest development allows for faster dissolving and better adhesion to various materials (e.g. PLA, PA, PVB, TPU).

About MOWIFLEX™:
MOWIFLEX™ is a water soluble thermoplastic material based on PVOH made by Kuraray. The lineup include grades for various applications like 3D printing, injection molding, frac balls and diverting agents.

news-2 Fri, 24 Jun 2016 19:56:00 +0200 Kuraray celebrates 90th anniversary https://www.kuraray-poval.com/de/news/detailansicht/news/lorem-ipsum-dolor-sit-amet-1/?tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&cHash=54ae2014ac7cf2efe12e0832e6d66409 Kuraray Europe GmbH congratulates with 90-years-landing-page.

Artificial silk known as rayon was the yarn that started to spin the success story of Kuraray. 90 years have passed since the stock exchange listed Japanese company was founded on June 24, 1926. To mark this day, Kuraray Europe GmbH (KEG) has created a 90-years-landing-page which summarizes the highlights of nearly a century of corporate history.

The first German representative office opened in 1965. Today KEG is located in Hattersheim am Main running additional sites in Köln-Troisdorf und Frankfurt am Main.
“Our 90th anniversary is a good time to review our achievements of the past years – and to look into the future“, says Dr. Matthias Gutweiler, executive manager of KEG.

Pioneering spirit – the basis for global success
Kuraray’s success is strongly related to its pioneering spirit. It was the first company in the world to develop a technology for the mass production of polyvinyl alcohol (KURARAY POVAL®).  From a base of polymer and synthetic chemistry, the Kuraray Group has built a unique and advanced system of technologies by fusing related technologies and expertise. Today Kuraray products can be found in many areas of daily life: in paper, textiles, packaging materials, printing inks, paints, adhesives, water-soluble films and technical ceramics. Under the Trosifol® brand name Kuraray produces PVB films for laminated safety glass for automotive, architecture and solar glass applications.

Important pillars: environmental protection and safety
Growth and responsibility go hand in hand at Kuraray. As a chemical company, Kuraray is committed to the principles of Responsible Care and aware of our responsibility for future generations. That includes the safety of employees, avoiding the environmentally harmful consequences of industrial production, reducing energy consumption inside facilities and developing new products and technologies that protect the environment.

Visions that come alive
Kuraray sets high standards to itself and aims at providing unique, innovative products that help find solutions to global challenges and improve the quality of life. Developing new products and applications and moving into new areas of business have high priority at Kuraray. However, the company does not only focus on business success but also regards itself as part of the society and accepts its social responsibility. The company actively engages in a wide range of activities that contribute to the well-being of communities: In Europe this includes collaborations with schools, universities and other educational institutions, supporting the Christmas in a Shoebox gift campaign as well as the participation in the Malteser Social Day.

Employees first
From its beginnings Kuraray cared for its employees. In the 1920’s the first president Magosaburo Ohara prepared decent dormitories for young workers and also prepared fitness facilities and kindergartens. Today it is the main objective of Kuraray Group Global Human Resources (HR) to ensure that each employee can work in a way which leads to personal growth. This includes the promotion of diversity, fostering of human resources, fair evaluation of performances, as well as establishing a healthy corporate culture.

One thing is for sure: Kuraray will continue to pursue its corporate mission for the following 90 years.

All the best and happy birthday!

The opening of this plant further distinguishes Kuraray Co., Ltd. as the largest producer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) in the world.

“Today is an exciting opportunity for Kuraray America, Inc., as we continue to increase our footprint within the Bayport area. Adding the KURARAY POVAL™ site to our portfolio will only ensure continued growth for our company and provide our customers with the ability to purchase product from a truly global scale,” said Bob Chvala, Vice President and General Manager of the PVOH Business Unit for Kuraray America, Inc.

The new KURARAY POVALTM plant will produce 40,000 metric tons of PVOH annually and employ a total workforce of nearly 100 employees (54 Kuraray employees and 40 contract personnel). Kuraray America, Inc. employs over 400 people in the Houston area, with 3 additional plant sites and the Americas headquarters located in the region. Production of PVOH has already started at the new plant. PVOH is a unique, functional resin that Kuraray Co., Ltd. first industrialized in the 1950s. KURARAY POVAL™ has a variety of characteristics such as superior adhesive strength, film formation, emulsifying properties and oil-resistant abilities. The polymer’s water solubility is its most distinct characteristic, along with its ecological advantage of being biodegradable. The physical and chemical properties of KURARAY POVALTM make it ideal for a wide variety of applications, including adhesives, paper, ceramics and films.
